Dear Friends,
This is the first summer in 45 years that Feathered Pipe had to shut down operations for an entire season, creating profound hardship and unprecedented opportunity. I made my way to the Ranch in July along with a handful other faithful volunteer friends, where we busied ourselves working on the projects we could manage. Paths were cleared. New sit-spots were born in special but underused settings. (The new “Creek Sit” is my personal favorite—thanks Zane!)
I savored the chance to walk the land and brainstorm with Executive Director Crystal Water and dream about future possibilities. What now? Where do we go from here? How do we do it? Fresh in our minds, too, was the recent memory of early June, when we still held out a glimmer of hope that we could salvage some of our summer season. We
were scrambling to work out how we could hold classes outdoors, weather permitting, to allow for easy ’social distancing.’ Wouldn’t it be great if we had an outdoor space to practice, at least in good weather? This idea has been a (Feathered) Pipedream for years. Imagine practicing outdoors on an auspicious site high on the sloping promontory across the lake with a panoramic view to woods and forests, emerging meadow, and nearby mountain ranges? And so was born the
idea of The Nature Deck.
Help Us Deck Out Feathered Pipe
After surveying the property and exploring scores of options, we identified an ideal, relatively flat spot on the western hillside above the lake. It affords an airy, often breezy,
dappled shaded area with a 360-degree view of the most captivating features of the Ranch: the lake, the stupa, the flourishing new growth that Mama Nature created to fill in the barren spot devastated by pine beetles in 2009, mountain ridges, and forest. It is accessed via a short, groomed trail that winds upslope from the creek footbridge. It will be a place where, in Wendell Berry's words, we "come into the peace of wild things."
Thanks to our remarkable supporters, we've already raised more than half of the estimated $20,000 to build The Nature Deck; work is well underway thanks to some generous-hearted and talented volunteers. Our prayer is to finish it before the snow flies so we can begin using it for our programs next summer. Crazy miracles have worked for us in the past, after all. Will you consider a donation to help us finish the work?
With love, deep gratitude, and pranams,
Anne Jablonski
